Nancy White – Unexpected

When this album came out on vinyl in 1983, I called it Unexpected because it’s a romantic, if occasionally whimsical, collection of songs, and at that time I was writing topical songs for a CBC radio show, and was known mainly as a comedy performer. So says Nancy White, Canada’s favourite funny lady. Originally released by CBC Records and Mouton Records, Unexpected is now available for the first time in CD format. The album has been digitally restored, re-sequenced, and re-mastered, and also includes one track recorded with the rest of the material but not included on the original LP (“Dakota Radio Suit”). Those who know Nancy mostly as a funny songwriter will be pleased to hear the intimate cabaret and pop styles that infuse Unexpected. From straight-ahead love songs (“Snow Angel,” “Footprints On My Floor,” “Every Dozen Years”) to insightful observations on the trials and tribulations of life (“Ballerina in the Wings,” “Mrs. Linda”) to lighter material (“I Know Cuba,”) to serious commentary on social issues (“Desaparecidos”), Unexpected will surprise your with its tender, touching, and thoughtful songs. An all-star cast of musicians joins Nancy, including Doug Wilde, Rick Whitelaw, Henry Heilig, Matt Zimbel, Kevan McKenzie, Kathryn Moses, Ron Dann, Cheri Camp, Allan Soberman, Xavier Garcia, and more. Beautifully produced by Bill Garrett and Matt Zimbel, the album features lush full-band arrangements of many of the songs, and includes a full string section on “Ballerina in the Wings.”
