It is testament to Stan Rogers’ impact as a songwriter that 40 years after his sudden tragic death in a fire aboard an airplane in 1983 at the young age of 33 – people young and old are still singing his songs and celebrating his influence. His songs “Northwest Passage,” “Barrett’s Privateers” and “The Mary Ellen Carter” are woven into the fabric of North American Maritime culture.

Recipient of the Diplome d’honneur by the Canadian Conference of the Arts and a posthumous induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019 are among his many awards. Stan Rogers’ legacy was honoured on a postage stamp series issued by Canada Post in 2021. Annually people from across North America flock to the Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso, Nova Scotia to celebrate folk music and its namesake’s legacy. The music and lyrics of Stan Rogers continue to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
